•  California Rivers Assessment: Humboldt County , Del Norte County, Siskiyou County, Trinity County, Mendocino County (International Center for the Environment) For every California watershed contains information that can be used in resource planning and decision making. Each watershed includes basic environmental facts; an interactive mapper with 30 available data layers; a set of static, predefined maps; and links to other sources of Internet information. Search by watershed basin or county. The above county links list watersheds found within the county as well as some basic information about the county.
•  Ecological Characterization of the Central & Northern California Coastal Region (Jones & Stokes Associates) 1981 (FWS/OBS-80/46.2) (print copy available in QH 105 C2 E36 1981 Hum Co Coll) Five volume work in eight parts. Prepared for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Bureau of Land Management as a compilation and synthesis of existing information that can be used to evaluate potential ecological consequences of urban, industrial and commercial development in the area. The bibliography is intended to be a guide to additional environmental information. The five volumes cover:

• Vol. 2.2: Species - contains species accounts for 200 plant and animal species that live within the central and northern California coastal region.

•  Ecological Subregions of California: Section and Subsection Descriptions: Northern California Coast, Klamath Mountains, Northern California Coast Ranges (US Forest Service) 1997 (print copy available in Ref QH 105 C2 E26 1997--includes accompanying map) Contains general descriptions of the environmental characteristics--geomorphology, lithology and stratigraphy, soil taxa, vegetation, fauna, elevation, precipitation, temperature, growing season, disturbance regimes, surface water characteristics, land use and cultural ecology--for all sections and subsection ecological units in California. Section and subsection descriptions are also available in the Encyclopedia of Earth. Search by section or subsection name. Sections and subsections are based on the National Hierarchical Framework of Ecological Units classification system developed by the US Forest Service. Includes all three northwestern California sections and each of their subsections.
• Humboldt County Natural Resources and Hazards Report (Humboldt County Planning Department) Prepared as a backgound document for the county General Plan update. The report provides an assessment of current conditions related to water (surface, ground, and pollution) and watersheds; biological resources (vegetation, fisheries, and special status species); forest lands (including Timberland Production Zones); agricultural production (including soils and economic structure); parks, recreation, and open space; cultural resources (historical and archaeological sites and landmarks); mineral and energy (sand and gravel, rock, metal, and oil and gas); scenic qualities; and air quality (climate and pollutants). Potential hazards evaluated in this report are geotechnical, soil, and seismic; flooding; fire and toxics; and noise. The report includes a large collection of supporting maps and figures.
• Klamath Knot: Explorations of Myth and Evolution (Wallace) 2003 (QH105 C2 W344 2003) Award winning personal vision of wilderness in the Klamath Mountains of northwest California and southwest Oregon, seen through the lens of "evolutionary mythology."
• Klamath-Siskiyou Forests and Northern California Coastal Forests (Conservation Biology Institute) Part of the Pacific Northwest Conservation Assessment that characterizes 40 major ecoregions in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. Each ecoregion includes sections on ecological setting, landscape description and history, conservation status, conservation at the political level, conservation research and planning, conservation biology issues, conservation opportunities and constraints, citations, and list of scientific names.
• Klamath-Siskiyou Forests (NA0516) and Northern California Coastal Forests (NA0519) (National Geographic Society and World Wildlife Fund) For each of these ecoregions contains a general description and links to a more extensive conservation assessment that also appears in Terrestrial Ecoregions of North America: a Conservation Assessement (Ricketts) 1999 (print copy available in Ref QH 77 N56 T47 1999)
• Klamath-Siskiyou Region (Natural Areas Journal, Vol 19, October 1999) 1999 (QH 76.5 O7 K55 1999 Humboldt County Collection) Papers in this theme-based issue provide an overview to the region as well as address specific topics relating its natural history, biodiversity and conservation.
•  Klamath Resource Information System (KRIS) (Institute for Fisheries Resources) Collection of information databases compiled for individual watersheds in northwestern California that contain numeric data, tables, charts, thematic discussions, photographs, and fulltext documents related to fisheries and water quality. They are designed for use in watershed analysis, management and interpretation. Emphasis is on historical information about fishery populations as well as current status and trends in water quality in the watershed. Each watershed-based database is available in three formats:
• Kris DB cd-rom - a stand-alone cd-rom that uses a customized Windows-based program to access information on the watershed.
• KrisWeb - contains much of the content that is found on each KRIS DB cd-rom. There is a searchable index to the content of the KRIS webpages and a KRIS Bibliography that contains the fulltext of relevant documents.
• KRIS Map - a companion cd-rom for each watershed that contains GIS data layers that can be used with ArcView or the free ArcExplorer software. KRIS DB cd-roms contain some graphics produced from the GIS data.

For each resource area gives brief information on land use, elevation and topography, climate, water, soils, and potential natural vegetation.
•  Coastal Watershed Planning and Assessment Program (California Department of Fish and Game) State program that is conducting fishery-based watershed assessments along the length of the California coast. Assessment basins are chosen as study areas based upon the nature of the socio-economic and natural resource problems within them. Emphasis is on assessing and analyzing watershed conditions for protecting and restoring salmon species and their habitats. An extensive synthesis report is prepared for each basin that includes historic and current vegetation cover and change, land use, geology and fluvial geomorphology, water quality, and instream habitat conditions. •  Northwest California: a Natural History (Sawyer) 2006 (Ref QH 105 C2 S29 2006; another copy in the Humboldt County Collection) Major overview of the natural history of northwestern California. Two introductory chapters cover the physical and cultural geography of the Klamath mountains and north coast watersheds. Subsequent chapters cover vegetation patterns, paleobotany and endemics, role of fire, impact of humans on the environment, present natural history, and preservation of the northwestern California environment. Interspersed in the chapters are lists of plant and animals species common to northwestern California. Includes a list of recommended references and readings.
• The Northwest Coast: A Natural History (Schultz) 1990 (Ref QH 104.5 N6 S38 1990) General introduction to the environment of the Pacific Northwest coast from Cape Mendocino north to Cape Flattery. Chapters cover physical setting; marine mammals and birds; seashore life; esturaries; dunes and freshwater wetlands; coastal forests; and human impacts.
• "Oregon-California Border" and "Redwood Coast" IN Ecological Characterization of the Pacific Northwest Coastal Region. Vol 4. Characterication Atlas-Watershed Unit Descriptions (Proctor) 1980 (print copy available in Docs I 49.2 Ec7/8) Each chaper summarizes the biological, physical and socio-economic aspects of each enviroment using text, maps and matrices.
•  Southern Oregon Digital Archives: Bioregion Collection (Southern Oregon University Library) Collection of over 700 online fulltext documents from federal and state agencies that relate to the Southern Oregon Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion. Search by author, title, agency, subject or keyword.
• Rain Forests of Home: Profile of a North American Bioregion (Schoonmaker, von Hagen, and Wolf) 1997 (QH 104.5 P32 R35 1997) Series of introductory chapters on Pacific Northwest coastal temperate rain forest ecology and human impacts. Earlier edition is titled Rain Forests of Home: an Atlas of People and Place (print copy available in Atlas G 1106.K1 R35 1995).

• Fire Ecology of Pacific Northwest Forests (Agee) 1993 (SD 144 A13 A55 1993) The first half of this scholarly work covers the natural and cultural fire environment in the Pacific Northwest, environmental effects of fire, and methods for fire history. The second half includes more detailed presentations on major forest types that cover environmental characteristics, fire regimes, stand development, fuels and management implications for each type. Northwestern California forests covered include redwood, mixed evergreen, oak woodlands, and silver fir/red fir. Includes 50 page bibliography.

• "Trends and Causes of Severity, Size, and Number of Fires in Northwestern California, USA" (Miller and others) 2012 Ecological Applications vol 22, pp. 184–203. Study assessed trends and patterns in fire size and frequency from 1910 to 2008 and the percentage of high-severity in fires from 1987 to 2008.

• Central and Northern California Coastal Marine Habitats: Oil Residence and Biological Sensitivity Indices: Final Report (Woodward-Clyde Consultants) 1982 (POCS Technical Paper #83-5) (print copy available in Docs I 53.29/2:83-5; maps shelved in the Documents Map Case) Prepared for the US Minerals Management Service Pacific Outer Continental Shelf Region. Includes a narrative report that describes the geological and biological characteristics of the California coast from Point Conception to the Oregon border; the development of biological sensitivity and oil residence indices that identify areas of potential concern in the event of an oil spill; and counter measures available to protect or cleanup areas of high concern. The accompanying map set includes a set of 130 1:24,000 scale maps and accompanying legends that characterize in detail physical and biological shoreline features and show biological sensitivity and oil residence indices; and a set of eight 1:250,000 scale maps that provide a more general physical characterization of shoreline features and repeat the biological sensitivity and oil residence indices.

• Coastal Data Information Program (US Army Corps of Engineers and Scripps Institution of Oceanography) Contains wave temperature and wind data transmitted from buoys and stationary platforms. Includes some Northwest California time series which can be located using the Station Directory or Station Map.

Includes references to additional literature.
• Naturalists Seashore Guide: Common Marine Life of the Northern California Coast and Adjacent Shores (Brusca) (QH 95.3 B78 Hum Co Coll) Field guide and handbook.
• Northern California Buoy Data (Scripps Research Institute) Contains links to real time and historical offshore buoy data from the National Data Buoy Center. Includes data on wind, wave, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, and water temperature.
• "Northern California Coast: the Oregon Border to Shelter Cove" and "Point Delgata to Point Arena" IN Living with the Changing California Coast (Griggs, Patsch and Savoy) 2005 (TC 224 C2 L58 1985) Introductory chapters discuss coastal processes and hazards, alternatives for combating or mitigating shoreline damage or erosion, and coastal land use planning and regulation. The majority of the book is a detailed regional characterization of the California coastline with maps delineating hazardous areas and existing erosion rates.
• nowCoast: Northern California (US National Ocean Service Coast Survey Development Laboratory) Web mapping portal that provides spatially-referenced links to thousands of real-time coastal observations and forecasts of interest to the marine community. The interactive map interface links to meteorological , oceanographic, hydrologic and water quality data available from federal, state, and educational observing networks. Menus also allow you to select data by location, type of observation/forecast and time.
• Regional Profile of the North Coast Study Region (California-Oregon Border to Alder Creek) (California Marine Life Protection Act Initiative) 2010 (print copy available in Cal Docs R960 M36 2010) Prepared for the Marine Life Protection Initiative, the profile and accompanying atlas provide information on the habitats, species, land-sea interactions and socioeconomic setting of California's coast from the California-Oregon border to Alder Creek near Point Arena in Mendocino County. The companion thematic atlas contains large-format maps in two parts -- the Coastal Management & Human Uses Atlas and the Habitat & Species Atlas. Spatial data layers are available at MarineMap.
• Shore Stations Program (Scripps Institution of Oceanography) Includes current and historical temperature and salinity data for west coast shore stations. Northwestern California stations include Trinidad and Crescent City.
•  Summary of Knowledge of the Central and Northern California Coastal Zone and Offshore Areas (Winzler and Kelly) 1977 (ref GB 458.8 W56) (4 volumes in 7) Extensive summary of existing information through 1974 prepared for the US Bureau of Land Management as background information for potential of OCS oil leasing. Covers physical, biological, and socioeconomic conditions. Includes an 800 page bibliography.

Environmental Pollution

• American Lung Associaton State of the Air: California (American Lung Association) Annual report that presents county-level air quality information for ozone and particle pollution using the most up-to-date quality assured data available for nationwide comparisons. Includes two measures of particle pollution--short-term exposure, which are occasional spikes in particle pollution from relatively infrequent events; and the year-round or chronic exposure from particles produced routinely in the environment. In addition, the report includes ozone data for each county that has an ozone monitor. For each county statistics are given for number of people sensitive to air pollution, e.g., children under 14, people with asthma or emphysema.
• California Air Quality Data (California Air Resources Board) Monthly with annual summaries (Print copy available in Cal Doc A 1165 A4) Contains ambient air quality data obtained from air monitoring stations. Access data by region, county and other parameters.
•  Scorecard: Humboldt County, Del Norte County, Siskiyou County, Trinity County, Mendocino County (Environmental Defense Fund) Uses data from federal and state sources to profile local environmental quality issues including air quality, toxic and animal waste generation, water quality, and environmental justice. Includes data, maps and lists of industrial facilities with chemical releases.
• Surf Your Watershed: County Information - Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, Mendocino, Siskiyou (US Environmental Protection Agency) Each county link lists watersheds located within the county. Each watershed has links to sites that include information on watershed health, air quality, toxic waste, water quality, stream flow, water use, land characteristics, and environmental organizations.

The California Land Patents Database contains the following information for each land transaction: date, location (township, range, section, meridian), name of person the land was patented to, case type, conveyance type, county, case number and the patent document identification number. Data can be used to make conservation decisions, aid in better siting of development projects,and provide baseline data helpful in recovering endangered species and for research projects. Information can be retrieved by taxa, county, or USGS 1:24,000 scale topographic quadrangle. Seismic shaking in this area is attributed to five sources—the Mendocino fault, faults within the Gorda Plate, faults within the North American Plate, the Cascadia Subduction Zone and faults belonging to the San Andreas Fault.

• EPA-Established TMDLs (US Environmental Protection Agency Region 9) Linked on this page are 12 Northwestern California watersheds where TMDLs have been prepared for sediment load and temperature. Many of these are also available in print in the Humboldt County Collection. A Total Maximum Daily Load is a quantitative assessment of water quality problems, contributing sources, and load reductions or control actions needed to restore and protect a specific water body. A TMDL specifies the maximum amount of a pollutant that a water body can receive and still meet water quality standards and allocates pollutant loads among point and nonpoint sources. Design values, medians, and extremes of dry and wet bulb temperature are included as well as various humidity parameters. Other weather summaries presented in tabular and graphical form include binned temperature data, degree days, solar radiation, and wind roses.
