Article by Genezoli on the discovery of Humboldt Bay by the crew of the General Morgan. This is the small group that anchored off Eel River, landed a small boat on the Eel sand spit. Rowed up Waite Slough. Crossed Table Bluff to the bay and rowed to Humboldt Point; then north up Mad River Slough where tied up & walked to Trinidad. They ended up back on their main vessel; sailed to the mouth of Humboldt Bay; got into on argument with the Capt. re: the risk of trying to sail into the bay on a flood tide; sailed back to S.F. by April 2, 1850. A second group organized & engagel the small Baltimore pilot boat, the Eclipse, & left SF on 4/20/1850 for Humboldt Bay. On the morning of 5/5/1850. They observed a vessel inside the bay. The Eclipse finally sailed into the bay & found the Laura Virginia anchored at Humboldt Point. The Laura Virginia crew had already been joined by a group that had come overland from Sonoma & had located at Arcata.
