Special Collections Newspaper Collections
Individual newspapers of the region are listed in the Library Catalog and Humboldt County News Online. They are more fully described on the Northwestern California Newspapers website. See especially the Researcher's Perspective by Susie Van Kirk, including scanned copies of the 60 articles on local history by Chet Schwarzkopf. The Northwestern California Newspapers Bibliography was developed for the Journalism History class taught by Mac McClary.
Newspaper indexing is discussed in the Newspapers Research Guide; this link includes microfilm call numbers for the major historical newspapers of the region.
The Library has Specimen Issues from a number of the local newspapers as well as a collection of Special and/or Commemorative Issues created by various newspaper publishers. Many of these are located in the Humboldt Room, although the Specimen Issues are available by appointment only. City Directories are another source of information and advertising and are sometimes published by newspapers.
A related group of "souvenir" items which actively promote the virtues of the local area is described in Boosterism - Humboldt County.
Similar to newspapers, and often issued in newspaper format, are the newsletters published by various organizations. Different aspects of Humboldt County's history are illuminated by these newsletters.
The Cal Poly Humboldt student newspaper, The Lumberjack, has been published between 1929 and the present, and is key word searchable and downloadable by year and issue.
