Introduction

The Humboldt Room has a large collection of newsletters from a variety of local organizations. Most publish their newsletters on a regular basis, usually monthly or quarterly, although some organizations follow a more irregular schedule depending on their size and financial circumstances. They are mainly published by clubs, businesses and societies. Their main focus is usually to provide information of interest to their employees, subscribers and other customers.

Newsletters have different purposes for being published depending on the organization. Many are trying to increase awareness of certain topics and events. Clubs and museums that send out newsletters try to keep members up to date on upcoming events as well as encouraging involvement and new membership. Other newsletters are created for social reasons like outreach opportunities, sharing common interests, and local history. Some allow people the chance to express themselves and their opinions. A few are created to educate the masses.

The information in each newsletter is different, but many have a list of local events, programs, and activities to encourage people to become more involved. They have well written essays, and articles, sometimes even poetry accompanied by high quality photos. Depending on who is creating the newsletter they could also have advertisements, news and volunteer opportunities.

This collection provides users with interesting reading material, as well as inspiring ideas for starting a newsletter of their own. It is also an excellent way to follow issues and organizations.

To facilitate research the newsletters have been organized into the following categories: Literary Magazines, Natural History, Museums and Historical Societies, Conservation Groups, Native American and a combination of topics concerning Social and Cultural Interests.

  • The first category, Literary Magazines, has essays, poems and other writings about a wide range of topics.
  • Natural History is a category that includes plants, gardens, birds and other thing that occur naturally in Humboldt County.
  • The newsletters in Museums and Historical Societies category include local history, natural history, and logging/railroad history.
  • The Conservation category focuses on organizations intent on preserving and protecting the local ecology.
  • As expected the Native American category includes newsletters from tribal organizations in the Humboldt area.
  • Lastly, the Social and Cultural Interests category includes a wide variety of newsletters from organizations that focus on social, political, or health issues.
