Whole page by Chet on Alliance & Arcata Bottom. The main four corners are at the Alliance store where the old Highway met Spear Ave. Early farmers raised potatoes & shipped them to S.F. in the 1870's via a railroad that ran from the corners to the bay; & later out into the wharf. According to Gene St. Louis, in those days, Indians came from the hills & nearby rancherias to dig potatoes by hand. THe old railroad r/w can be seen behind the store. The tracks have since been removed. Albert Hunt arrived in 1887; bought 40 acres near Alliance & started a dairy farm. By 1893 enough other landowners had gone into the dairy business to allow them to start the first co-operative creamery known as Arcata Creamery No.1. After that, potatoes growing pettered out. Alliance got its name in 1892 by Jerry brown who ran a store & P.O. at the four corners. Gene St. Louis said the first Noah Falk mill, known as the Dolly Varden Mill is now.
