Full article on Augusta Schumacher Jones &-1873 rode into Garberville. 3 yrs old born in 1870. Snowing on that 4/15/1873. "She saw the Indian huts pelted with snow". She was the first white girl to enter Garberville. Her father Gos bought a cabin from stockton ( located where Hendrix Hardware is 1950) John Garber's store was down near the river on small flat. The townsite was a big flat prairie with few Indian huts. Some man named Garcia is rumored to have built the first house. Jacob Garber moved his store up to the flat at the spot now occupied by Flaherty's Grocery store is (1950). Jake (Jacob) Garber had originally settled on the Sroofe property which which later become part of the Robertson Ranch. The upper flat (townsite ?) was owned by Tom Harris. Gos constructed a 2 story home later enlarged it into a hotel. His wife, Mary Anne, ran it until Augusta was old enough to help out. Chinese were hired to help in the kitchen pre 1888. All supplies came in via pack train from South Cave. The train was led by a white mare with a bell usually ridden by Frank Parker, a bare footed small boy. Bill Luke said the chinese, in 1880, constructed the road from Briceland to South Cave John McMillan had the contract. The Telemachus J. Hail family came in 1885. In 1916 Hi Thrapp brought the first truck into Garberville. In 1888 Augusta married John Monroe of Eureka. They had 7 children. He died. She ran the ranch, named the place "Mirada". US Postal people changed it to Miranda. While in Miranda, she married William John Jones, a telephone lineman. The family moved to Eureka the next 10 yrs; then back to Garberville. Jones became the local justice of the peace till 1938 when he died. They had 1 son. William brought the 1st auto into Garberville.
