Good description of trip from Arcata to Yreka via 299 and 96. 299 is oil surfaced but quite winding. Out of Willow Creek Highway 96 is paved to Weitchpec. From Weitchpec to Orleans the road has been widened to 2 lanes but is rough and dusty. Construction is still underway. The first 4 miles out of Orleans is 2 way , but there to Walker the greater part of the road is winding with many stretches of single lane. From Walker to Yreka the road is a oiled gravel road. Driving time from Eureka to Yreka ~ 8 to 9 hours for the 210 mile distance. 299 from Arcata to Redding, 161 miles , can be travelled in 6 hours. The road is oiled and there quite a few miles of narrow and winding road. One half mile east of Junction City one meets the new highway which has been completed for 3&1/2 miles. Then one is diverted to the old road which runs down into Weaverville. From Weaverville to Redding the road is a good highway.
