Good history of the Jolly Giant Mill in Arcata by Dave Way. Bill Preston recalled it was about 1873 when Jolly Giant started building north of Arcata. Minor and Falk got the lease on the Preston Addition in 1873. Bill recalled they logged right on this ground in and around his home near HSC and they used oxen teams before they ever used horses. The Jolly giant started cutting lumber in June 1875. The operation was built by Elijah Folk for Isaac Minor and Noak Falk, who owned the mill. A gravity rail used later on to get logs down to mill after the mill was converted to a shingle mill. The circular saw was introduced in Hum. Co. in 1862; followed by the band saw which was introduced in 1886. Stumpage prices were $1/1000 BF and lumber sold for around $3-$4/1000 BF. Prevailing wages = $1-$5/day. Folk cont. to operate the Jolly Giant mill until 1885 when he sold out to John and George Harpst, O.H. Spring and Sylvester Meyers. They ran a shingle mill on the Jolly Giant site for about 7 yrs. They used chinese workers who took the sawdust out in wheelbarrows to a slash pile. The machinery of the mill was pulled out around 1892 and by 1900 nothing remained of mill.
