History of the development of growing eastern oysters on Humboldt Bay near Brainards Point. The Humboldt Oyster Growers Inc. began to experiment in 1933 by cultivating 5 acres of beds. Dykers were built around the bed and 600 C.Y. of gravel was spread over the mud 6'-10' feet deep. The next year two boat loads of native Humboldt oysters were planted. All went well until the sting rays discovered them and ate the entire catch of oyster seed. The 3 rd year the beds were restocked with native oysters. In 1938 8 acres were under cultivation and success occurred and they shipped the first the batch of oysters to S.F. on Sept. 21, 1938. It was the successful shipment of 25 baskets to the commercial market of the Humboldt Bay raised eastern oyster.
