Scope Statement

The Pamphlet Collection supplements the cataloged holdings of the Special Collections & Archives. It consists of brochures, flyers, newspaper clippings, email printouts, booklets, reports, serials, and other ephemera relating to Humboldt County and its immediate surroundings. The collection documents local issues, events, agencies, businesses, governmental bodies, organizations, communities, specific places, prominent individuals and aspects of the lives of area residents. It can provide details and clues to help researchers more fully develop their questions and fill in gaps on topics that are not adequately addressed in published materials.

The collection has been maintained since the 1960s, though some items date back to the mid to late 1800s. From the 1970s through the mid 1990s, the Times Standard newspaper was systematically reviewed and clipped for addition to the pamphlet collection. Since 1997 many fewer newspaper clippings have been selected, though those that are added come from a wider selection of papers.

The Pamphlet Collection is added to continuously. While new materials are necessarily gathered opportunistically, balance in perspectives represented is actively sought. Newspaper clippings are added very selectively to the collection due to improved access to online local newspaper archives and indexing of the Times Standard from 1989-2005 by the Humboldt County Library. Special Collections staff is primarily responsible for acquiring new materials for the collection.
