Jess Greenlaw of the Greenlaw family is the one who cutting down the pepperwood trees on Elinor Flat. Elinor was named after Elinor Wiggins. The Greenlaw family ranch was on both sides of the Eel. The 1938 flood wrecked the "Dog Mill" which was a somewhat uniquely designed mill run by a squirred cage 12' - 14' feet in diameter. The uncle of Alva Barkdull built it to provide the ranch with water. Elinor was the terminal for the NWP railroad for a while. It had a saloon, hotel and logging camps near by which were on the railroad side of the river. The county road crossed here to go to Scotia. In the winter there was a ferry operated by the Jerry Meekin family. In the summer, stages crossed/forded the river here. The 1955 flood removed Elinor.
