TEXT:
Letter from White Alder of Ferndale 11/27/1879. In talking about floating logs down the Eel he states, for about 8 months a year, the Eel is about 200 feet wide and 2 feet deep on it's riffles. Rafting of old growth logs on Eel has only been partially successful. The logs are too big to be rafted in anything but rivers of slow current, steep bluff banks, and deep water. P.3 Rand McNally & company has maps of CA counties & RR for sale, 25 cents each.
