About the Northwestern California Newspapers Website
Overview
The Northwestern California Newspapers website provides information about newspapers published in Humboldt, Del Norte and Klamath Counties from the 1850s to the present. In addition to brief narratives and timelines of the newspapers, grouped by seven geographical areas, there are pages for each of the newspapers and a bibliography of articles about journalism in northwestern California.
Quotes from some of these sources are presented to help place the newspapers in their historical context. This is supplemented by a briefest of histories of Humboldt County by Susie Van Kirk. She also has compiled chronologies of the newspaper work of Susie Baker Fountain and Andrew Genzoli. Excerpts from an interview describing Van Kirk's use of newspapers in her historical research are included.
More information about this website and the continuing work on northwestern California newspapers can be found in the summary of a grant project in 2003-2004.
