" Arcata derived her name from a tribe of Indians, the only survivors of a terrific upheaval of an unknown date, (Jan. 16, 1700) and was related over 60 years ago by an aged Indian. Up to the time that this Indian explained the meaning of Arcata, it was called Uniontown by the whites. The Indians had a wigwam where the Plaza now is. After this great upheaval and "the big walking water" (ocean), came, carrying away the immense number of trees and many , many of the red men. And the "still water" stayed (the bay). The surviving Indians made a sort of camping ground where the Plaza now is and called it A-Ka-E-T meaning with them, Sit- Down- Eat."
