Walter Dickson's parents brought him to Eureka in 1868 from Nova Scotia when ha was 3. He went to Loleta in 1888 to be the town's first station agent for the ER & E RR. he said there were no dairies in the Eel RIver valley at that time( not true). Potatoes & grain were the main crops. His father started C.C. Dickson started the first diary in the region. In 1888 Loleta had one house only. Walter built a store while he was the station agent. In 1895 he sold i to his relative Bob Dickson & moved back to Eureka where his father had founded the White House Store in 1888. In 1913, Walter sold the White House Store to George Ryan & moved back to Loleta. Loleta's greatest growth occurred after 1914 when the railroad was completed to S.F. The township was originally owned by Whitten. After he died his sons sold the 160 acre site to William Perrott who laid out the present town. Now, 4 modern motels are here on 101.
