Other long times here are Rufus & Martha Herrick who own 300 acres on Lighthouse road. They came in 1876 when Loleta was called Swauger. Around 1900, Martha suggested the town's name be changed to Loleta- and Indian name meaning Quiet Water. Ralph Herrick now lives on the ranch. His grandfather came in 1852, served with the army at Fort Humboldt & later moved to Loleta.
