Whole page on Shively by Chet Schwarzkoff. Many photos-of the Shively ferry operated by Elmer Day, Shively Store, Church, Mrs. Myrtle Kemp's 2 houses, school, Railroad Depot, boon of Gilbert Robinson, and the old Stokel resort & the low level bridge. There are 250 people there now. The site was "discovered" by William Shively in 1869. Trains stop at the depot says Mrs. Lula Ewan. She has seen that the access was only by ferry for up to two months in winter. William Shively came from the midwest in the 1860's & settled in Rio Dell. He got along with Indians & whites very well. He raised 2 Indian boys Budds and Ben. It was while on a hunting trip with them that he first set eyes on the future townsite. Around 1900 he sold his holdings to PL. Then the railroad was built & the town staged rodeos. Logging lasted for around 10 yrs & shively was a lively town then says Joe Stockel, whose father built the resort in 1906 after bringing his family in 1901. Gilbert Robinson came to Shively in 1913 from Rio Dell & he now has 125 acres.
