Whole page on Bucksport by Andy Genzoli. Trinidad was laid out on a 1/4 section by Capt. A. Parker of the schooner James R. Whiting on April 8, 1850. This was the first town in Humboldt County & in 1854, it become the County seat of Klamath county. The next town to form & he laid out was Humboldt City by members of the Laura Virginia party immed. after they entered Humboldt Bay on April 14,1850. The next town formed was Union & was laid out by members of the Union Company. The next town to form was Bucks Port. David A. Buck expressed in Dec. 1849, that this spot was the best for a town. Before David returned in the summer of 1850. Dr. H.N. Lloyd laid claim to this land under the agreement of the Union Company. After building a log cabin on this spot, he neglected his claim to this spot & want to live at Union when it became the center of operations for the Union company. At this point Buck returned and took possession of the land. The next town to form was Eureka - in May 1850. It was formed by members of the Mendocino & Exploring Company. On May 13, 1850, an agreement was signed reps of the Union Company & Mendocino Company was permitted to shore in the establishment of the new city. Humboldt County was created by the act of May 13, 1853. When Fort Humboldt site was selected by Cal. Buchanan in late Jan. 1853 he set aside an area on the flat down below the bluff to handle overflow of troop personal. It was named Fort Lippit. The Gregg party remained at the site of Bucksport for about 10 days. Bucksport served as a important pioneer trading center, serving as a post on the bay to shipping from Hook Tan and Honeys Landing. It remained active through the yrs before WWII & today (1949) sees Std Oil tankers berthing to discharge gasline & oil.
