Whole page of photos & text on relics found by Dr. H.H. Stuart. Hundreds of arrow heads displayed, zoomorphs (slave killers). Dr. Robert F. Heizer of the UCB Dept. of Anthro. & Archeol. recommends Dr. Stuart who has been digging for the past 22 years. 1927. Dr. Stuart has dug into more than 500 Indian burials on Gunther Island. In 1917 Llewellyn L. Lovell sank a trench 7' feet deep & 115' feet long. In 1927 Dr. Stuart began digging on the Island. In the following 10 yrs he dug on the island and kept careful notes. In the late 1930's Eureka High School became interested in starting a museum and the late Supt. George Albee took over digging on the island. Under the supervision of Cecil Clarke, students & WPA workers did a tremendous amount of work & many fine specimens were procured for the school. No accurate records were kept. In the early burials the tools & other items were broken by the Indians & scattered through the grave. Dr. Stuart believes the Wiyot buried all their dead on the island.
