Whole page by Chet on Alton. Good photos. This is a junction of railroad's for which cattle, railroad ties, lumber, logs, grape stakes. Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Smith of Ventura took over the old Golden State creamery building & started an ice-making plant in June 1948. Population ~ 300 in the area. The Altun school was built in 1893 and now in 1949 has seen its last session- for it has been condemned, and the children are told to go to Fortuna this fall. It has 46 pupils last semester. Dwight Felt's grandfather, Dr. Theodore Dwight Felt, came to Weaverville in 1849 & to Hydesville in 1852. Peter Hauck came in the 1860's. George Hiller also come about the same time. The town was named after Frank Oliver's sister Alta. The Olivers were large landowners here at one time. Dwight Felt said the earliest settler in the area was a man named Miller whose homestead was where the highway & railroad bridges are today. Mary Jane Hill has lived here 55 years, she recalled John Dinsmore was one of the early settlers.
