TEXT:
Long article on proposed new 101 highway across the Freshwater Lagoon Sand Spit. Photos- view south of the spit showing many logs & debris on spit. Some evidence of wave overwash seen. Spit is about 4500' feet long. This route was studied and surveyed in 1919; & again in 1932. Recently, for 5 years, engineers have monitored the spit. They discovered the central portion on crest remained unchanged, the width varied 500' feet - 700' feet', most of the crest is at elev. of 21' feet, that rains can cause the lagoon to break over & through the spit; the ocean waves & surg can throw lugs & stamps up onto the crest. Last April 1, 1948, C.H. Purcell, Dit & P.W., awarded a $668,708 contract to Piombo Construction company of SF. Construction will start this year.
