Whole page on kneeland. Photos of: Mullen Ranch HS, Hurley Home; Kneeland School; Lew Hess Lodge; view SW from top of "Scenic Rock" on Kneeland Prairie. John J. Kneeland came up there in 1852. Present population ~ 200. Many of the orig. settlers were Irish, who came from the mines at Virginia City, Nev. In those days the county was referred to as the "Hibernian battle ground." Tim Mullen lives with his niece & husband, Frances & Carnell Padlock; who run the 1360 acre Mullen ranch. Tim is the last of his brothers, sons of Jerry Mullen who settled there in the in the 1860's. Tim was born at Lawrence Creek 78 yrs ago. He tells of the gov. building a Fort at Iaqua Buttes in the 1850's & a road was put through in the 1880's. Iaqua is an Indian would that means "good morning". Nearby soldiers Grave was the scene of an army massacre. A man named Booth escaped. That stream is still called Booth's run.
