Good history of David R. Jones, prominent lumberman on Humboldt Bay. In 1860 he and Jones Kentfield (of S.F.) bought the old Smiley Mill. He improved it putting in the first circular saw on Humboldt Bay, cutting up to 25,000 BF/day. In 1861 he shipped the full cargo of Redwood lumber from Humboldt Bay. In 1866 he took in as a partner, Capt. H.H. Buhne. They construction a double mill on Indian Island. See the sketch of this mill in Elliot. This mill could cut 90 BF/day & the Redwood logs came from the Redwood trees near the edge of the bay & small streams. In 1875 be construction the South Bay railroad to Salmon Creek. This railroad used the first steam equipment on Humboldt Bay. In 1878 he built a new mill on the Smiley Mill site, having worn out the old one. After he logged off Salmon Creek he moved the railroad to Freshwater Creek & called it the Humboldt Logging Railway Company. By 1880 his firm had 7 miles of track, 2 large locomotives & 28 cars. In 1 year he shipped 20 million BF of redwood lumber. At their peak they owned 11,000 acres, operated a tug boat called the Little Jones. They also built several vessels.
