The story of Eddy. Around 1900 the ownership of the land & woods in the Freshwater valley passed from Excelsior Redwood Company to the Freshwater Company, owned by an eastern man named Eddy. Cabins were built, a big store construction. Jim Bassford who had been supt. for Excelsior Redwood Company was made head man for the new Freshwater Company, suggested the site that was a few miles "this side of Freshwater" be named Eddyville. The new company spent $500,000 putting in a millpond in preparation of the completion of a new mill. Then word came from the east to shut everything down. The cabins and store were boarded up and sat closed until PL company got active around 1916: Several families moved into the cabins.
