"Many Indian Village Sites Located By Loud Weott Territory Established. Last week Loud found 50 ancient Indian village sites along the Eel River between Alton and the mouth. He has spent the past 2 months searching for Indian relics and records. On Saturday, September 27, 1913 he began the trip by boat and travelled to the South end of the bay. The next day he established headquarters at Hookton and succeeded in locating a number of village sites around the end of the bay. Later he obtained Dandy Billy as a guide and by wagon traveled to a point a short distance upstream of Alton. Dandy pointed out many places which the shifting river channel had eradicated. Since coming to the county he has located and mapped 160 village sites. On a trip up Little River several weeks ago he ascertained the Weott language reached a short distance above Alton. The last Weott village site he found traces of was at the mouth of the Van Duzen. Several miles upstream a little north of Scotia he found an Athabaskin Indian village site, and another right at Scotia. This determined the territory over which the Weights roamed in the past. He also found that village sites formerly existed at the mouth of Elk River and Bushes Point but the action the tides had erased all evidence. Since excavating the 8 skeletons in the shell mound at the north end of Gunther's Island Loud has made no further explorations there. Now that his work is nearly completed he will again do some excavating and exploration of this shell mound. He will return to UC Berkeley around Nov. 1.
