A good description of 299 from Eureka to Redding. Driving time was 51/2 hours over 160 miles of road. The survey was made by Whitney Allyn, sec. of the Eureka C of C. After leaving Blue Lake the road begins to climb and there are several places where it's one lane and where abrupt switchbacks are built. Blue Lake to Willow Creek takes one hour and 25 min. Between Salyer and Burnt Ranch there are 2 rugged areas under constr. Between Burnt Ranch and Del Loma there are two wide unsurfaced stretches. From Del Loma to a point several miles beyond Fawn Lodge there 55 miles of fast well surfaced highway. Then from there to Shasta the road is narrow and winding but well surfaced. From Shasta to Redding the road is a first class highway.
