TEXT:
"A Story of Industry - The Inter Urban" by Earl G. Roberts. In 1904 Henderson and Bull, operators of the electric cars in Eureka, announced in the Arcata Union that they intended to extend their line on old Arcata Rd. from Eureka to Arcata. J.N. Lentell had already surveyed the route. The editor of the Arcata Union had observed up to 15 passengers on the cars of the California and Northern RR which ran 4 trains daily from Arcata to Eureka. However, the terms for a franchise applied by the city of Eureka city council killed the project. Other major developments were occurring at this time. Calif. Barrel Co. was originally organized in S.F. in 1888 to make barrels for the Spreckles Western Sugar Refining Co. At the present time they employ over 1000 people at its 30 acre site in Arcata and at their extensive logging operations on RW Creek and the Klamath River.
