Photo and article by Speegle on old Chinatown of Eureka. It occupied bldgs. bordered by 3rd and 4th and E and F streets. The corner bldg. was across the street from the Rowell House, a 2 story rooming house which stood on the present site of B of A. When Councilman Kendall was killed in 1885 by a stray bullet from a Chinese Tongman, a mass meeting was held in Centennial Hall located on 4th st. between F and G st. The decision was reached, the Chinese must go. F.A. Weaver, who owned some of the shacks in Chinatown and who also operated a laundry at 1st and F st., opposed the decision. To convince the Chinese they had to leave on the passenger steamer that was to be ready to leave in 2 days, a gallows was erected at the corner of 4th and F. Wrong [The Chinese were rounded up and taken to Daby Island on Hum. bay and held until the steamer Pomona was ready] Wrong. The bldg in the photo is located at 4th and E and was a fish market when Speegle first arrived in Eureka in___? 1908?
