Whole page describing what two men found out by walking the "gap" between Longvale and South Fork. They talked to John M. Deioy of Eureka. He has construction a wagon road from Fort Seward to Island Mtn. There are 27 miles of track to be laid south of Island Mtn. and only 7 miles have been graded. 23.5 miles of track remain to be laid north of the big tunnel at Island Mtn. During the winter, slide after slide has been the rule. There are about 700 - 800 men at work south of Island Mtn. and 200 - 300 north of the big tunnel. Many more will be put to work around May 1st to bring the total to 3,000 men. Tracks from the south have been laid northerly to a point 1/4 mile north of Dos Rios on the northern end tracks have been laid to within 3 miles of Fort Seward. By May 12th, passenger service of NWP will be extended to McCann. The Island Mtn. tunnel is 4,337' feet long and was completed on March 17th. Work began on tunnel in May 1911. Between Shively & Sausalito there 47 tunnels. Mr. Freeman took photos all along the way.
