TEXT:
Photo and article on the expulsion of Chinese in 1935. They had been hired to work in a cannery near the mouth of the Eel River. A group of angry citizens formed a posse and went to the cannery armed with clubs, pitchforks, etc. The fishery company didn't like the idea by decided it was best not to fight. So the Chinese were taken back to Eureka and loaded into boxcars for shipment back to where they come from. The photo shows 2 boxcars loaded w/ Chinese. The only other time Chinese visited Eureka was when a large ship came for a load of lumber. The Chinese came ashore and were careful to move about the downtown district, walking in the middle of the streets. They were not molested but seemed happy when their ship was ready to leave this port.
