Quoting from Henry Wetherbee in the spring of 1850, a member of the group on the ship, General Morgan- "The Indians were at first quite friendly, but we soon had an outbreak. 300 Indians had gathered at the north end of the bay to enforce their demands. A party of 29 men went with boats & canoes, to meet them. Each man was armed with a good rifle when within 200 yds of shore, we opened fire when they were congregated for a war dance. 12 had been killed and many wounded." ( cont. in SBF col. in 3-25-65) This was Indian war #1 on Humboldt Bay. We returned to Eureka, built a log fort, where 3 men stood guard night & day for a month. After this we laid out another town at the north end of the bay which we called Uniontown, but is now known as Arcata. SBF questioned some of this account.
