P.4 [ un. ] read able ... Fruitland and onward along the high ridge past Olsen's and on to Harris where the Toaby family served good food. From there the road continued to Bell Springs where the Grothe family had a large ranch and kept a stopping place. The road then ran down the Rattlesnake grade to Cummings which is now (1937) known as the Ranch House Inn. Proceeding onward the road climbed up & down hills past the Rancho Primera & on to Laytonville where Mrs. Helms ran a hotel and served many kinds of canned fruit. From Laytonville the road ran down the valley, then up over a mountain on a road that seemed to have been built on solid rock. The road then ran over a mountain to Willits. At that time the road did not go by way of Longvale, as the highway hadn't been built there yet. At Willits people then took the train for parts further south. This year (1937) the section from Elk River to Beatrice is nearing completion which will eliminate curves near Fields Landing. Down by White's Ranch in Mendocino County is progressing which will eliminate all those curves that made that stretch one of the worst spots on 101. It has long been one of the most dangerous stretches in the overland route. Further south all the twists & turns between Arnold and the Willits Valley have been eliminated as of 1937.
