Speegle's Column. Photo and article. He describes downtown Eureka when he first arrived. First and Second streets along w/ F st. made up most of the business district. He arrived on the steamer Pomona at the foot of C st. First st. was a rendezvous of a vast number of sailors, most of which were Scandinavian birth. Several bars and hotels on First st. catered to them. The ship chandlery and food store of the H.H. Buhne Co. was located in a 2 story bldg. near F st. on the south side of First st. It had heavy iron shutters over the windows on the ground floor as a protection from robbers. The other principal business on First St. contained groceries, food and provisions. it was owned by Thomas Cutler and is shown in the photo. It was remodeled nearly 50 yrs. ago and now belongs to George Kelly and was located at the corner of First and D.
