TEXT:
Superv. Cole described the early days of Freshwater. He said there were 5 woods camps in operation in the valley employing 600 - 700 men. There were only horse stages then - so only a few made it to Eureka on Saturday night. The two saloons in Freshwater provided liquid refreshments for those left behind. There was always at least a dozen fights. He recalled one time when there were 7 fistic brawls in progress on the streets at one time.
