Tom Bair died. Photo of him is on page 1, 7 " by 9 inches. He was born in 1844 in Arkansas. He was an orphan at age 9. He rode the bell horse on a pack train from 1855 to 63 (age 11 – 19) in the Trinity River mining trade. After the end of the Indian War he purchased the old Minor Ranch on Redwood Creek. He accumulated 32,000 acres of ranch and raised 15,000 head of sheep. He became president of the Eureka Herald Company which said company was sold to the Humboldt Standard in 1913. In 1902 he organized the Eureka Water Company and purchased the waterworks and the rights of the Ricks Water Company, conducting business until it was sold to the City of Eureka for $270,000. He and J.C. Bull had contracts to build the Humboldt Bay jetties, completed in 1899.
