TEXT:
Whole page of photos & text on excavation of Indian artifacts from Patrick's Point State Park and from Freshwater Lagoon during construction of the new 101 across the spit. Article is by George Beshore. The excavation at Patrick's Point occurred in 1948 under the direction of Dr. Robert F. Heizer. At Freshwater Lagoon, Norman Worley, highway engineer, took charge. A burial ground was discovered & the bones were photographed and reburied off site. The remains of 21 Indians were removed & reburied. The Patricks Point excavation could not date the artifacts. They found no pre-Yurok culture artifacts. The site at Freshwater was on the hill at the north end overlooking the north part of the lagoon. Dr. H.D. MacGinitie of HSC examined a few of the bones & artifacts which are now being sent to UCB. Two distinct burial grounds were found. One~ 200-400 yrs old; the other < 200 yrs. All but one of the skeletons were adults & half were buried face down. Many were buried between 2 slabs of redwood bark & many were buried under horses bones & one under an elk. Few artifacts were found at the Freshwater sites.
