President of Holmes-Eureka Lumber Company & father of Fred Holmes, present head of that company. Holmes-Eureka first started logging in this area in 1905. Where the present schoolhouse now stands. See photo top right of page. They built a summer bridge to connect with the Railroad so they could houl their logs to Eureka. Logging came to end in 1910. Their summer bridge had to be replaced 4 times between 1905-1910 due to the heavy winter floods. PL started logging there in 1910. Their camp was known as P.L. #3. One tree was cut that scaled 130,000 BF and took 16 40' foot railroad cars to haul it away. The remainder made 19 cords of shingle bolt material. The stump measured 18-21' feet in diameter. Bryant Seppingfield started the truck garden era. Old timers names were Sam Aldrick who bought his lands from Joe Holmes. Most people came to Holmes after 1905 and bought their land from the lumber company. Chaplie Gregg, his brother John, and John Hoffman bought their land their ranches here the same day from Frank Osterlund who originally homesteaded Holmes. The earliest settler was Mike Johnson around 1890 who started the Happy Camp shingle bolt company. They floated their bolts down to Scotia. The school has 60 pupils which serves Redcrest-Englewood-Holmes. The present school was built in 1908. The famed Bryan's Hole was named after John Bryan, father of Rae Bryan. Bryan's Rest was downstream at Shively which was a resort operated by Rae Bryan. The Indians knew Holmes well. Their corn pounders and bowls are found along the Eel when the water is low.
