Whole page on the passing of a historic landmark in Orick- the old building by Robert Swan and George Griffith, first as a ranch house, then as an Inn & stage stop. The hand hewn timbers & split rails of Redwood remained sound. It was burned to the ground to make way for new buildings. The article was written by George Bashore. The property is now owned by Fred Lundblade & leased by Mr. & Mrs. Golden Conley. Mrs. Minnie Lowery, Swan's daughter, now living in Eureka, told the writer the history. The building is on the east side of 101 just south of Redwood creek. The house was built in 1874 by Griffin according to his step daughter Mrs. Edward White. Grittin died in 1883. Swan then owned Orick valley. Arthur Davidson arrived in 1881 & knew Swan very well Davidson is now 93. Davison believed the site of the old building was on land homesteaded by Charlie Jewell, who later sold out to Swan. The old building was moved in later years to the West side of 101 across from the church at the south end of town. Where it was operated by Daderick Oliver, as an Inn. Davidson recalls miners flocked up the coast enroute to the mines. They would come as for as Swan's place; then they would leave their wagons and trudge inland across the Bald Hills. Mail was carried by horseback along the beach route. The road was pushed through in 1902 & Bert McConnaha started operating a stage coach route. Swan died in 1928.
