Whole page on Pepperwood. Photos of the old store, Van Noy Motel; Pepperwood Cottage Court, Elinor School; Pepperwood school; Stafford Inn; old Lucas Hotel; Brower's Lodge. Pepperwood was settled originally by the Burley and Whitens families just after William Shively moved to settle his town site in 1869. The flat was covered with bay trees. Popul. is around 400. Bill Lucas came to Pepperwood from Shively in the 1890's & built the hotel. Another stopping at Elinor was owned by Joe Barkdull. The Pepperwood school was built in 1882. Now they have 28 students. According to Ray Holmes, resident since 1903, the pepperwood trees were logged out by 1918. All the redwood logging was done by PL. The flood of 1937 hit Pepperwood hard. It was the worst since the flood of April ?, 1915. A cable crossing once operated across the Eel from Elinor to the NWP tracks. The Stafford Inn was once the headquarters of the Brown's Mill. The mill burned. The old highway swings through Stafford on its way north to rejoin the newer 101. As you approach the south Scotia bridge you pass the Brower's rustic lodge, a new place.
