Photos of : large black walnut tree, Riverwood Inn, Robert Field's home, Madrana Motel, Charles Watson, Sheldon's Restaurant, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Combs ( long time residents), Deerhorn Lodge store interior. The post office serves 300 people. The Combs 32 acre ranch is across the river from Phillipsville. They been there since 1901. Mrs. Combs come to Phillipsville from Arcata in 1887 while her husband come in 1896 from Santa Cruz, they were married in 1901 in Garberville. Phillipsville was homesteaded by a guy name Phillips. He married an Indian girl & had a son Kneas. Kneas recently died in Harris. Joe Stockel was the first store keeper in Phillipsville & was here in 1887 when Mrs. Combs arrived as a child. He sold out in the 1890's & his building burned about 30 yrs ago. When she came in 1887 most of Phillipsville was owned by Alex Bearding. He sold out to Sam Tiffany & Jacob Combs. His son Charles is the person whom Chet is quoting. David Teel was Mrs. Combs father. He was a surveyor. Sam Tiffany bought out many a homesteader in partnership with a man named Quinlan. Some of that land is now in state parks. Margaret Combs, age 94, is the mother of Charlie. She has 152 acres just north of Phillipsville. Her ranch is run by her daughter Mrs. Ellen Fleming & her son Darrell Beasley. The large black walnut tree was planted by Albert Logon some 90 yrs ago. Bill Luke who now lives in Weott, was born in Phillipsville 84 years ago (1865). Chet talked to Bill. Bill said the original stage road went by Alderpoint, Blockburg and Bridgeville. The first bridges over the Eel were at Alderpoint & Blocksburg. The first road to Phillipsville came from Harris via East Branch in the early 1880's. In his earlier years the family at Phillipsville raised corn and wheat and let the hogs run everywhere. It was open county in those days. At age 10 he packed the first hay raised at Harris.
