He arrived in Eureka on June 25, 1850. Stayed till 1867. He built the first flouring mill & at one time, owned the Ryan Mill & owned the steam tug "Mary Ann". He erected the first frame building in Eureka. It was on 1st street. It was used as a county jail for a while. It was removed in April 1875. The location was lot 4, block 6 or lot 20 on Ryan's Map. It was on the south side of 1st street 90' east of F, & ran 30' east. The first issue of the "Humboldt Times" occurred on September 2, 1854.
